Rabindranath Tagore, or Thakur (1861-1941) was a famous poet, novelist and playwright from Bengal, India. He was also the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.
Gitanjali (Song Offerings) is his best-known work. The original Bengali collection of 157 poems was published in 1910; the English version published in 1912 has 103 poems and Tagore's own translations were often radical, leaving out or altering large chunks or combining two separate poems.
