Rembrandt’s 350th Anniversary
Undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest painters, Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) was an equally accomplished etcher. He transformed etching as an art form through technical innovations and the development of his own skills. His native Dutch landscape often provided him with inspiration, and The Windmill, completed in 1641 and reproduced for our cover, is no exception. The remarkable level of detail, varying textures and depths of tone of the buildings reveal the artist’s unparalleled draftsmanship skills. Originally released as an Embellished Manuscript in Fall 2006, we are pleased to bring back this design to honour Rembrandt on the 350th anniversary of his death.
