Gutenberg - Genesis Slim
Product Information The printed word and beautiful illustrations make the Gutenberg Bible the best-known work in the history of book arts. Forty-nine copies of the two-volume Latin Bible exist today. In the fifteenth century Johannes Gutenberg invented the art of movable and reproducible type, a discovery that changed the meaning of printing and allowed the creation of the 42-line Bible which was published in 1455. About 180 were printed, most on paper and some on vellum. Following Gutenberg's invention, it became possible to reproduce the work of scribes who copied the texts carefully by hand. After printing, these pages were decorated by artists drawing beautiful creations along the margin, giving character and beauty to the pages. This cover features the first page from Genesis.
