The world tree is a motif present in several religions and mythologies, particularly Indo-European, Siberian and Native American religions. The world tree is represented as a colossal tree which supports the heavens, thereby connecting the heavens, the earth, and, through its roots, the underground. It may also be strongly connected to the motif of the tree of life. Specific world trees include Yggdrasil in Norse mythology, the Oak in Slavic and Finnish mythology, and in Hinduism the Ashvattha (a Sacred Fig).

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is an immense ash tree - the world tree around which the nine worlds existed. Its name is generally considered to mean "Ygg's (Odin's) horse". The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away.

Celtic tree-worship was part of Mourie's cult and his holy well dispensed healing waters. Trees were sacred to Druids who worshipped in nemed or sacred groves.
