The lion is a common charge in heraldry. It traditionally symbolises bravery, valour, strength, and royalty. The heraldic lion depicted here is the Bohemian Lion which forms the small coat of arms of the Czech Republic. It is a "lion rampant" depicted in profile standing erect with forepaws raised and a crossed tail or queue saltire. The Bohemian Lion dates back to the 13th century and appeared on the seal of King Ottokar II (1253-1278).
