The name Finegas (Finn Eces, Finneces, Finnegas) belonged to an Irish druid who hoped to become wise by eating the salmon of knowledge. Unfortunately, his pupil, Finn MacCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) burnt his thumb while cooking the fish and sucked the burn. Realising that his pupil was the one destined for knowledge, Finegas let the boy eat the whole fish.
